📚 Variations

  • If you don’t have Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs on hand, there is no need to run out to the store, you can use plain breadcrumbs and add some Italian seasoning to flavor them.
  • Instead of using breadcrumbs you can swap it out and use your favorite boxed stuffing mix, we like the Stove Top brand, or for a low-carb option, you can use crushed pork rinds instead.
  • Frozen spinach works best in this recipe, however, you can canned spinach that has been drained well or even fresh spinach in a pinch.
  • You can also add in other delicious items like cooked bacon, green onions or even some diced peppers for more flavor.

👩🏻‍🍳 Tips

  • I used to use paper towels to dry the thawed spinach a little to ensure that all the excess water was removed before I added it to these spinach bites.
  • If you find that the mixture is sticking to your hands while you try shaping the balls give your hands a light spray with nonstick cooking spray to prevent the sticking.
  • I always recommend baking these delicious spinach balls on parchment paper so that they don’t stick to the pan or brown too much in the oven.
  •  Our favorite dipping sauces for this great snack are marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or even plain sour cream.

🤔 FAQs

Can spinach balls be made ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the spinach balls ahead of time and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Just be sure to add a few minutes to the baking time if they are chilled before baking.

How do you use frozen spinach?

To use frozen spinach in this recipe, thaw the spinach and squeeze out any excess liquid before adding it to the other ingredients. You can also use fresh spinach, just be sure to blanch it first before chopping and adding it to the mixture.

Can I steam frozen spinach?

Yes, you can steam frozen spinach. Simply place the frozen spinach in a pot with a small amount of water and cook over medium heat until heated through and tender.

Do you thaw frozen spinach before cooking it?

It is recommended to thaw frozen spinach before cooking it, as this will help remove any excess water and allow for better incorporation into the recipe. You can do this by placing the spinach in the refrigerator overnight or using a microwave on the defrost setting.

Is steaming spinach better than boiling it?

Both steaming and boiling are great cooking methods for spinach, but steaming may be a healthier option as it helps retain more of the nutrients in the spinach. Boiling can cause some of the nutrients to leach out into the water.
